Shed Construction

When we outgrew storage space in the garage, it was time to build a shed. We needed a new place to store all the yard equipment, patio furniture, and surplus building materials. Once again, I got busy with CAD and came up with my own design. It was late October 1999 and I wanted to finish before the snow was flying.

General work included excavation, stone retaining wall construction, footing installation, framing, sheathing, asphalt roofing and staining.

The overall dimensions of the shed are 12'-0" x 8'-0". All of the framing is 2x4, the floor sheathing is 3/4" wolmanized plywood, the wall panels are 5/8" T-111, and the roof sheathing is 1/2" OSB. The floor is anchored to four 4x4 pressure treated members mounted horizontally to galvanized brackets. The brackets are anchored to embedded ties at each footing (8 total).

This was my very first roofing job and I'll remember it forever because I'm sure I had the flu the day I was nailing shingles while snow flurries filled the air. I finished all the carpentry work in early November, but the staining would have to wait for spring 2000. I installed shelving, hangers, and other hardware to facilitate organized storage.

Here is the finished shed as it stands today. I used natural stain colors to blend it into the surroundings. Another proud accomplishment for me!
